Importing Buttons into a Wireshark Profile

Buttons, buttons, buttons... one of the coolest features added to Wireshark.

In the last blog, I showed you how to create a button. Now let's look at how to import buttons from another profile or from another computer.

Import Buttons from Another Profile

To import buttons from another profile into the current profile, select Edit | Preferences | Filter Buttons. At the bottom of the window, click the Copy from button. Wireshark only lists profiles that contain buttons.

After importing the buttons into the current profile, click the checkboxes to activate/deactivate buttons. You can also rearrange the buttons using the up and down arrows if desired.

Import Buttons from Another Wireshark System

You don't need to import the entire profile if you want to share buttons with another Wireshark system.

Go to the system that has the button set you want to copy over to another system.

  1. Open the profile with the desired buttons. Right-click the profile column and select Manage Profiles. Click the directory hyperlink to open the profile folder.

  2. Copy the dfilter_buttons file from the local machine to the desired profile's folder on another machine. In the image below, I am looking at the dfilter_buttons file location for a folder/profile called "TCP Analysis."

Simple, eh?
